Site of a late 19th century colliery closed in the 1980s. The first shaft was sunk in 1865 and it was the first colliery to have an underground haulage system installed. At its peak in the 1960s it produced 1,000,000 tons of coal per annum. By 1985 all of the seams were exhausted and the colliery closed. It is now an industrial estate and country park. (3) (4)
