Full Description

Beauvale Manor Farm, 500yds S of the Priory, incorporates some early C15 remains, consisting of a gatehouse and within the courtyard a retaining wall with a flight of steps leading to a small arched doorway. Several interments have been found here, and a worn slab of local sandstone 6ft x 3ft 6in x 5in, bevelled on 3 sides, by a pump in the yard, has the appearance of an altar slab. 2 medallions of C17 Flemish glass are leaded into one of the farmhouse windows. (1)
The amount of Med work at the Manor Farm ... would suggest some monastic settlement ... altar stone and interments suggest a chapel. (2)
In 1940 the ancient altar stone of Beauvale Priory was erected in the chapel of the RC church of Our Lady of Good Counsel at Eastwood. (4)
(Detailed site description) It is probable that the remains visible are those of a Med courtyard manor house. Both the altar stone and the C17 stained glass have been removed (glass at St Mary's, Greasley). It would seem unlikely that there was a "monastic settlement" here, so near Beauvale Priory. There are no obvious contemporary or literary references to such a site. The farm's name and architectural features suggest a manor house and the burials and altar stone presumably indicate an associated domestic chapel. (5)
Manor Farm, S of the priory. C17. Part rubble (from an earlier house?). Facing the house a ruined wall with a late medieval stone doorway with moulded jambs. (6)
Farmhouse, gatehouse and boundary wall. C17, C18, C19. Square headed, moulded and chamfered doorway, C16. (7)
