Full Description

Just across the valley (from Castle Hill), and also on an escarpment, stood the great house of the Barons de Insula. Their name appears on the pipe roll of 1176. (Alternatively this might be the house begun in 1598 by Sir Charles Cavendish.) (1)
The building remains at the Grives are thought to be those of the "new building" of Sir Charles Cavendish. Cropmarks visible in 1963 revealed the plan of the buildings, although a small scale excavation produced no more than a brick 8in x 4in x 2in similar to those used at Torksey
Castle. (2)
The wall was razed in 1971 and the site cleared; was under plough with no remains evident. The landowner/farmer stated that the structure was built directly onto the natural bedrock which is about 9" below the topsoil. No Roman material was found during perambulation nor did the farmer know of any previous finds. (3)
See L8291 for Ro finds.

Surface finds of pottery made within 50 yds of the site, however, are Romano-British, comprising one sherd of Derbyshire ware, one rim form in a sandy fabric, and a piece of roofing tile. (3)
