Full Description

The Upper or Great Lake was once the mill lake. It is known that there was a dam on the W side of the Priory in the Middle Ages. A license of 1437 refers to "Les Dammes" in this area. (1)
There is no doubt that this was the monastic mill pond. There are references to both pond and mill in Med MSS. There is a ruin at the waterfall but this is almost certainly a folly probably occupying the site of the Med mill. (2)
No trace of a Med watermill was seen (at site of folly). (3)
Watermill shown. (4)
Grid ref approx.
See M8939 for Priory, M8938 for ornamental lake (which was the mill pond).
