Full Description

Trial excavations on the Northgate allotments c 1974 ... A number of ditches and gullies were revealed. A plaster floor was found by an allotment holder. (1)
Features of ... Med date, under c 600mm of topsoil. (2)
Six trenches, between the bowling green and North Gate. All contained several intersecting pits, ditches and smaller features. Trench 3 contained a rubble deposit at a depth of 0.4m overlying a "palster floor", interpreted as the remains of a substantial building; associated finds suggested a Ro date (but appears now to be Med). A number of the smaller features contained only Ro pottery, while others contained both Ro and Med pottery, where the former must be residual. The "subsoil" was probably a layer disturbed by allotment digging. (3)
"A plaster floor over metalling", possibly the remains of a building of some quality, came from Trench 4. The floor sealed a layer containing Med glazed pot. (4)
Plaster floor identified in later excavation, see L11903.
See L3690 for Ro features and L8522 for P Med finds. See M18367 for Osmundthorpe.
