Full Description

Med features probably relating to the Med hamlet of Osmundthorpe along the Northgate frontage and possibly throughout the development site. The pottery compares generally with the excavated collection from Slaughterhouse Lane in Newark. It does not contain Saxo-Norman pottery or Cistercian or Midland Purple wares suggesting that the period of occupation lay within C12 - C15. (1)
Osmundthorpe is thought to have extended along North Gate from the Goat Stream (now under Queen's Road). It shared a chapel, located near the Fosse Way crossing of the Goat Stream, with the North Gate suburb. Buildings extending along North Gate as far as the Hospital were deliberately burnt down during the Civil War. Features dateable to the Med period from the excavations included three sets of parallel ditches, suggesting re-cut boundary ditches between properties. (2)
See M18366 for Ro settlement here.
