Full Description

C14 pottery revealed when the topsoil was cleared by contractors. Excavation revealed 5 pits, a ditch 6ft wide, 3ft deep and the stoke hole of a kiln or furnace. Much silica-based slag and a large amount of pottery associated with this. None of the pottery was wasters. (1)
Presence of iron slag and blooms suggest a bloomery site. Pottery finds include Stamford ware. (2)
Site visited and plotted by (4). (3)
The features were quite near the surface and consisted of a large hearth, 3 post holes and what appeared to be a well worn working surface. To the E were a series of unexplained circular pits. The rest of the site yielded hundreds of iron nails and quantities of iron slag. Pottery finds were numerous and were greenglazed and early Med. In an extension of the topsoil removal on the side nearer to the church there was an unmistakable cobbled trackway leading across the hillside from SW to NE. (5)
See L8535 for flint, M3992 for church, nearby; L7862 for earthworks.
See L8947 for coin hoard.
