Full Description

Canal, c 1900 - "Markham Cut" after a director of the Staveley Company. A water channel 200yds long, 3yds wide and parallel with the River Meden to provide a store of river water for pumping to Warsop Main Colliery. Large brick pumphouse alongside. During WWII water was pumped constantly on to blazing pit tips - known locally as "Blackpool Illuminations" (02/01/1969). (1)
