Full Description

The tower was refashioned in C17. The nave is partly C14 and the chancel a little later. The Norman font is set on a low base which might be the base of a Saxon cross. The tapering stone crudely carved with a cross and covered in glass may also be Saxon. The Savilles have a modern chapel and there is a tomb to Henry Saville 1881. (2)
No Saxon work is evident, the font supports contain a portion of a Norman pillar showing slight traces of chevron work. Possibly from the remains of Rufford Abbey some 4 miles to the N. (3)
W tower, nave and chancel. The Savile transeptal chapel added by T. C. Hine, who restored the church in 1873. The top of the tower was redone in 1663. (4)
A piece of sculptured stone…said to be Anglo-Saxon…is almost certainly a post-Conquest grave marker, probably C12. There is also a small piece of carving, possibly patternwork, on the base of the font: it is too fragmentary to comment…on its possible origin. (5)
