Full Description

A complex of crop and soilmarks indicating a Ro settlement, with dwelling and double ditched quadrangular enclosure as the main features. Trial trenches in 1949 showed that the ditches had been frequently recut and produced tiles and C3 and C4 pottery (retained by KDM Dauncey, Birm Univ). (1)
The site is mostly on level ground but the E side drops to a ledge and ditch that mark the W bank of a former course of the River Trent. The building at SK 80216254 was probably a villa, T shaped with 7 rooms, the main block lying just W of N. Traces of a possible colonnade are along its W side. Originally protected on the N, W and S by a single ditch, this was replaced by a double ditch enclosing a larger area mainly on the W. Perambulation produced tile and stone debris from the house site but no pottery. The farmer said the excavation was beside the track at SK 80166247. A tangle of small enclosures sit atop the old river scarp on the E extending some 600m N-S (see M18191), and a contemporary ditch cuts right across the Ro site to the modern road. (3)
A probable Ro villa is visible on the W bank of the Trent. 2 narrow ditches 25ft apart form 3 sides of a rectangle c 650ft by 500ft; the angles are sharp. In the centre is a building consisting of a range of rooms with wings at one end. In the drought of 1959, 2 lines of large post holes were visible beside the stone building; probably the remains of an earlier timber house. Ro pottery can be picked up on the site (4,5). Todd considers it to be a small portico villa standing at the centre of a rectangular double ditched enclosure. (4) (5) (6)
Morph: 177.3.1 enclosure, 177.3.2 enclosure, 177.3.3 house, 177.3.4 enclosure, 177.4.1 enclosure, 177.4.2 enclosure, Ro villa. (15)
See L8672 for pit alignment, L4281, L4823 for nearby cropmarks, M18191 for IA settlement.
