Full Description

Sturdy, short Early English west tower the top rebuilt in the 1885 restoration. Early English arcades. Double-chamfered arches. (c.1190 – c.1250). The aisles, chancel, and clerestory are all Perpendicular in date (c.1335 – c.1530). (1)
The excavation of a dry trench around the present church located footings of destroyed portions of an earlier church and a semi-effigy of a knight (c 1325) adjacent to the chancel. The footings of the aisles which originally flanked the tower were observed extending north and south from the front of the tower and west from the south aisle. Less substantial foundations were located extending east from the north aisle, suggesting a chapel or similar building north of the chancel. The sunken or demi-effigy is carved on a rectangular slab of dense yellow limestone 1.9m. x 0.55m., bordered by a wide, plain chamfer. (2)
Bank separating the church from the Rectory. (3)
7 timber samples from the bell-frame and 1 from an oak chest were analysed. Tentative felling date of 1408-1428 for the bell-frame. The timber from the oak chest was probably felled in the late C14 at the earliest. (4)
