Full Description

The parish school of Blyth was originally the chapel of the hospital of St John the Evangelist (see M 5544). (1)
It is known to have been in use as a school in 1695, but the date when it began as such is unknown. The school was closed in 1940. (2)
Rectangular building with a door of late C12 or early C13 date. (3)
The building has been restored and converted into 2 small cottages. A plaque describing it as the Hospital of St John has been affixed to the W end. (5)
Occupied property. Dog tooth ornament in its jambs and segmental arch. Situated on an island between the 2 roads to the S. This island is raised with the stone structure sited on the highest elevation. (6)
The east gable has a C17 blocked stone mullion window in the garret. The north front has a C17 five light stone mullion window to the left and evidence of further, now blocked, mullion windows. (7)
About 20 years ago the building was converted into 2 self-contained flats. The stone fabric is in good condition and the alterations have been done well. (8)
See M18284 for possible church here, L8750 for mound, M5543 for St Edmunds, M5544 for alternative site of St John the Evangelist.
