Full Description

Block of fields and small enclosures. (1) (2)
A group of fields situated along a slight ridge between the River Ryton and a tributary on fields called the Alps, up to 2.4Ha in area, which include a number of subrectangular enclosures, possibly of Ro date. A cluster at SK 612866 comprises 7 enclosures from 250sqm to 0.42Ha in area, as well as 4 further enclosures to the S, and 2, incomplete, near the river. Two circles, both near small squares 15.0m across, are all possibly huts. Dark spots on an AP may be pits. (3)
Morph: 108.14.1 Roman field system, 108.14.2 Roman farmstead, 108.14.3 Roman stock enclosure, 108.14.4 Roman hut circle, 108.14.5-14 Roman enclosures, 108.15.1 modern ditch. (4)
Watching brief on pipeline. Ditches corresponding to the cropmark plots were recovered in 17 areas. Gulleys / slots interpreted as trenches for fencing were found in 5 areas and pits in another 2 areas: these features did not register as cropmarks. Pits, two within an angle between fields had charcoal rich fills and flue-like channels and had probably been used as kilns or ovens. Some field ditches recut. One field ditch that had become filled was recut with a gap left either as an entrance causeway or for a bank. One Ro sherd was recovered from a gully parallel to the cropmark ditch in Area 16. (5)
Area extensive, grid ref centred.
See L 4922 - cropmarks to W, L 4925 - continuation to N.
