Full Description
Block of fields and small enclosures. (1) (2)
A group of fields situated along a slight ridge between the River Ryton and a tributory on fields called the Alps, up to 2.4Ha in area, which include a number of subrectangular enclosures, possibly of Ro date. A cluster at SK 612866 comprises 7 enclosures from 250sqm to 0.42Ha in area, as well as 4 further enclosures to the S, and 2, incomplete, near the river. Two circles, both near small squares 15.0m across, are all possibly huts. Dark spots on an AP may be pits. (3)
Morph: 108.14.1 Roman field system, 108.14.2 Roman farmstead, 108.14.3 Roman stock enclosure, 108.14.4 Roman hut circle, 108.14.5-14 Roman enclosures, 108.15.1 modern ditch. (4)

Area 12, ditch with broad 'U' profile. Area 13, ditch, recut on S side, both 'U' shaped. . Earlier ditch had steep sided slot cut into its upper part, maybe a fence slot. Area 14, ditch, 'U' shaped profile. Area 15, 3 parallel equidistant E-W gullies with shallow flattish bottomed profiles and gently sloping sides. Southern one with an entrance gap. Area 16, ditch with parallel gulley. Ditch recut, earlier cut 'V' shaped, recut 'U' shaped. Grey ware recovered from gulley. Area 17, N-S aligned gulley, apparently linking to E-W field boundaries in areas 16 and 18. Area 18, E-W ditch, two pits nearby. Ditch broad, 'U' shaped, with gulley running along S edge, probably a fence. Piece of brick / tile, possibly Ro. Sub-rectangular pits, with charcoal fragments in the bases.
