Full Description

Founded by Roger, Archbishop of York in 1258. Tower and chancel of mid C17 but small traces of Early English and Decorated work have survived the complete restoration of 1855. (1)
It is almost completely the work of restorers of 1658, 1854-5, and 1905. The crossing tower collapsed in 1651, causing the chancel and ‘the greatest part’ to be ‘very ruinous…shaken and much injured’. It must have been Early English according to the remains of the strong piers. Rebuilt in 1658. The oldest virtually untouched part is the N transept. G. F. Bodley rebuilt the chantry chapel in 1873. He also refurbished the chancel. Of 1852 the s porch, and of 1854-5 the rebuilt N aisle and N porch, the N chancel aisle, clerestory, and battlements, and the E window of re-used C13 stonework. All this renovated in 1905. (4)
