Full Description

A total of 3808 flint and chert artefacts were discovered by surface collection and subsequent excavation between 1966 and 1971 at Misterton Carr Farm by Mr Macfall, the farmer, and MJ Dolby, keeper of DM. 75% were Mes implements in the Maglemosian tradition (cf Starr Carr). Found in 3 areas of concentration (excavation at above grid ref) on a slight E-W ridge of late glacial deposits of orange sand being exposed by peat contraction. Finds all in DM. No trace of occupation or stratification obtained from excavation - C14 date 4330 BP from base of peat. Amoung the Mes implements were others of the late Neo and early BA. Sandy horizon 1.5m above base of peat possibly representing localised clearance by the late Neo population. The Neo implements include 4 polished stone axes with origins in Cornwall; Langdale, Westmorland and Craig Lwyd, N Wales. (1)
This site is on Carr Farm, Misterton: Misterton Carr Farm is a restricted prison farm from which no finds have been recorded. The E-W sand ridge is clearly visible rising, in places, to 1.2m above soil level, it continues NE into Lincs (? to Risby Warren). Mrs Macfall, who had a large quantity of other flints and a polished flint axe, ... confirmed the sites on the ground. The investigator found up to 40 worked flint flakes and a fine barbed and tanged flint arrowhead. (2)
One Neo axe, of group VII, is in Hull Museum (No 380, NT 62). An axe of group VI is in DM (No 449, NT 74). (3)
See L5103-6 for findspots on the area - see SMR map.
