Full Description

Remains of tramway, from Robinetts Arm to Coal Wharf, 1825-1840. A low embankment starting from near road sign on Bilborough road and continuing W over fields towards Sandy Lane. About 1ft-18in in height and c 5ft wide. Can only be seen when field is in pasture or before crops grow. Soil blackened at site of wharf. Becoming increasingly difficult to see as land is ploughed. W section obliterated by opencast mining (24/07/1967). (1)
A survey of 1827 shows the railway from the canal arm at Robbinett's had only just reached the eastern of the two "Pit Closes". There is still no sign of the later branch into Old Moor Wood, nor of the other line by Catstone Farm towards the Strelley Wharf. (4)
Clearly exposed by ploughing is the track bed of a tramway which runs E-W through (Broad Oak) farm and ends at Bilborough Road opposite Melbury school. This tramway is thought to have been constructed between 1827 and 1833 to convey coal from pits N of Catstone Hill to a landsale wharf on Bilborough Road. The exposed remains consist of a strip of broken stone blocks about 6 ft wide, although in a neighbouring ploughed field the tramway continues as a low embankment. (6)
NB only a short stretch covered by scheduling. Grid ref is for W end.
See M2294 for Robinetts Arm, M2060 for bellpits.
