Full Description

Signs of early foundations N of Radmanthwaite Farm may be C11 or C12. (1)
Believed to be the home of the Beck family. Ed I granted the bishoprics of St David's and Durham to members of the family in 1280 and 1284. (2)
Henry I had a hall or hunting lodge at Mansfield. It was superceded by a new one built at Clipstone by Henry II (Becks moved into old one ?) (3)
Terraced into the hillside are the grass covered foundations of a small structure 7m x 5m but no other features can be positively identified. The site is cut by a sunken road. Outlines of possible buildings on (5), but on estate map of 1861 these appear to be cattle pens. (4)
OS SW 1 is a confusion of this site and villa site.
NB there are two farms called Radmanthwaite, see L5332 for area of earthworks (this GR), the other is at SK 519 637.
