Full Description

A stretch of probable Ro road is suggested by a straight section of modern road, a cropmark of parallel hedges or ditches, and a parish boundary, all on the same alignment. (1)
… A gravel band 16ft or thereabouts in width and 200yds in length running in a NW-SE direction on the SW side of (Camp ) Hill. In 1799 Rooke noted that a road passed very near this spot, the old road from Mansfield to Newark, and formerly known as "The Street". (2)
A gravel band (see M2767) may be its continuation SE to Ad Pontem. From its N end the road may continue to Mansfield. Alternatively, it may join up with the possible Ro road (M4144) running between Ollerton and Blyth. Either route would fit into the Ro road system in this area. (3)
There can be little doubt that this is the line of an early road but perambulation produced no surface evidence to either substantiate the course or establish the origin. The AP evidence is very strong and there can be no doubt that this is "The Street". It has not been possible to locate the noted gravel band, and enquiries of farmers/landownwers were negative. Ro finds and occupation are prolific hereabouts and the route might well have Ro associations. (4)
Intermittent double linear feature running SE to NW, from 465620 360070 to 466920 357500. Apparent junction heading off to the E near Kirklington. The suggestion that the modern road by Belle Eau Park follows the course of the Roman road may be incorrect. (5) (6) (7) (8) (9) (10) (13)
Metalled road surface found in trenching - approximately 9-10m wide with cambered edges and shallow flanking ditches. A mound about 5m wide with a ditch 1m deep on the south side may represent the agger of the road. Remains of the road can still be found at the top of the drainage ditches [around 466440 358470], where a band of stones and gravel can be seen. (11) (12) (13)
See L8296 for Ro site on course, M2765 for fort, M2763 for Camp Hill.
Grid ref for NW end.
