Full Description

In 1796 an Act was passed for the construction of the Mother Drain. It was constructed between 1796 and 1803 but only from the Bawtry area down to Misterton Soss where water passed through a sluice into the River Idle. In 1812 Willaim Jessop recommended an extension of the Mother Drain to the Trent with a sluice near its mouth and steam pumping. - not completed until 1816, the steam pump was not installed until 1828. The drainage system in the area was remodelled in 1941, changing the flow to run westerly. (1)
The Gringley Pumping Station was built in 1941, since when all flows in the Mother Drain have been transferred in a westerly direction and the outfall into the River Idle at Misterton Soss was decommissioned. (2)
