Full Description

This mill, with a 28ft diameter waterwheel, was demolished in 1857. A new mill was erected with a 35ft diameter wheel by 1860. It drove 2 pairs of French stones and 2 pairs of Derbyshire grit stones. In 1890 the digging of the LNER Shoulder of Mutton Tunnel caused the water sources to be diverted and halved the supply. Later on the Bentinck Colliery workings caused a 3ft subsidence and the mill could not be worked. It was demolished in 1934. (1)

Kirkby Mill stood at the bottom of Mill Lane, N of Kirkby Woodhouse. Had 28ft diameter wheel. Rebuilt 1857 with a 35ft diameter wheel dated 1860, drove 4 pairs of stones, 2 pairs of French stones and 2 Derbys. Lost some water with the LNER tunnel under the Shoulder of Mutton Hill diverting some water supply. Bentinck Colliery subsidence caused a drop of 3ft and the mill was demolished in 1934-5. In mid C18 it was in the hands of the Fryer family followed by the Robinsons. Sold to William Alfred Curtis in 1932. (5)
