Smaller circular features (cf. L8047), spread over fairly wide area, with curvilinear cropmark feature to far south of the group. (1) (2) (3)
These cropmarks fall on gently undulating arable land on the Trent flood plain. The 2 E fields are under crop. The field to the W is ploughland but nothing of interest was found there. (4)
A curvilinear ditch recorded as a cropmark near the southern end of the site was sectioned (trench 08) and found to incorporate numerous sherds of pottery, including a large part of a shouldered jar, probably datable to the 1st century AD. In another trench (02) Iron Age and Romano-British sherds were found together with post holes suggesting that structures of this period existed here-abouts. Some small ring ditches, including that tested in 1992 (trench 07, Ring F) could themselves have been created as wall slots for, or as drainage-gullies around, timber buildings, perhaps in an Iron Age or Romano-British context.
