Fishponds, levelled. (1) (2)
Levelling of the fishponds was carried out by the farmer on 5th-6th April 1967. Great quantities of white material were exposed in the central area of the first enclosure in the NE half of the field. A sample was analysed … a probably artificial mixture of sand and clay with a high proportion of lime. This is likely to have been a lining of the fishpond. The farmer had previously dug a number of trenches across the banks of the second enclosure. These showed some soil stratification, and possibly the beginnings of simlar pond lining on the inner sides. No pottery or other finds were made, although a few scraps of animal bones were noted. (3)
Published (but un-named) fishpond complex now destroyed. (4)
