Full Description

Circular feature - tumulus (scheduled). Rectangular enclosure. (1) (2)
The mound shown on the 6in sheet marked "tumulus" is visible from the ground in the standing corn. There is a bank running parallel to the main road (Fosse) across the centre of the next field to N, running E and W. (3)
Ploughed out; no intelligible remains. The name noted by Barley (Dead Man's Grave) is unknown locally. (4)
Site visited when ploughed and barrow is not clearly visible. There is a large mound in the field, appears to be natural, presumably the barrow is thought to be on top. Saxon metalwork found by metal detector. (5)
The northern mound (in the Mill Field), marked as a tumulus on the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map, had at one time a mill on it, but is too large merely for a mill base. It may be a tumulus…(6)
There is no support from air photography for Mr. Oswald’s suggestion that the mound in Mill Field is connected with a Roman encampment there, and it seems most likely that this feature is a monument in its own right. (7)
Morph: 191.3.1 Round barrow. (8)
See M3012 for Ro town and L8381, L9858 for earthworks. See L1731 and L5942 for E Med finds.
