Full Description

When the Duke of Newcastle purchased the property in 1839 he caused the greater part of the house to be pulled down. After a lapse of some considerable time it was rebuilt, such portions of the old building that remained being converted into a good residence. (1)
Stables built for the eighth Duke of Norfolk, 1701-04. (2)
The Duke of Newcastle's demolition of c 1840 removed the main building, leaving the E court, or servants quarters intact. (3)
The present Worksop Manor is entirely modern, the large quadrangle of offices and farm buildings being of the C18, and the private residence adjoining the S side being of the C19. To the W is a terrace with greenhouse. (4)
The 8th Duke of Norfolk, modernised the [first] house at the beginning of C18 … the Duke's new stable and office court still survive today. … demolished most of the remainder of the [second] house in June 1841. The outbuildings … were retained and converted into the present rather modest Worksop Manor. All that then remained of [the second house] were ... the screen with its Doric columns and triumphal arch designed to conceal the stable court. (5)
See M8963 for previous house, M8964 for C19 house, M4370 for C18 house.
