One of the earliest brick houses in Notts. It is important in two respects: the constructional (rather than decorative) use of terracotta, and the plan. Its use [of structural terracotta] dates the house to c.1515-40 and is unique in Notts secular buildings. The first example of the lobby entrance type of plan. Probably built as a hunting lodge by Sir John (later Baron) Hussey, Chief Butler of England, who held the manor in 1522-6. Modern roof and windows. (1)
It is reasonable to assume that Lord Hussey, acquiring the estate in 1522, would have completed the building by 1525. (2)
Tree ring estimate of date: 1520-40 (1520's likely). (4)
Timber sampling in 1987. Analysis of 11 of 15 samples produced a felling date of c.1537 (5)
