Full Description

Barn and 2 adjoining stables. Late C18 and C19. (1)
Barn: The oldest farm building is the barn. This appears at first sight to have consisted of a 3-bay section, built in single Flemish garden bond, with tumbling at the gable end and cogging at the eaves. It had a near centrally placed threshing floor and distinctive King Post trusses. However, the south end of the barn is longer than the north end. The resulting asymmetrical plan could mean that the barn is later than previously thought, perhaps dating to just after 1800. At a later time the barn was extended to the north…This provision for another threshing floor and storage capacity might have been in response to heightened demand for corn in the early years of the C19. (2)
Farm Buildings: The other farm buildings (later C19). The stab les and granary on the northside of the yard are large and capable of housing a well above average number of working animals. They include looseboxes, and rooms which may have held harnesses, tackle and probably feed. The large granary at the E end was reached by enclosed steps and a delivery door on the otherwise unbroken roadside wall allowed for delivery from that direction. Other buildings built at a similar time were a 6-bay cart/implement shed, a multi-purpose range close to the farmhouse. Both were built in single Flemish Garden Wall bond and like the stabling were built in the later part of the C19. The multi-purpose range has provision for a laundry/brewhouse, a coal store, pig and poultry stalls, a loosebox (now garage) and a gig house. (2)
