Part early C18, but other features are mid-C18 (rainwater head dated 1757) and C19. Inside some early C18 features and a splendid two-storey drawing room of 1751. Additions by the County Architect quite separate. (1)
The site survey…has identified the fabric of an earlier phase of building within the cellars [stone wall and stone mullion windows]. A map of 1638 …indicated that the plot of land now containing the Hall was undeveloped. [Therefore the earliest fabric post-dates 1638]. The first indication of the presence of the Hall is a map dated to 1740 by Joseph Colbeck. The hall is shown [on the pre-enclosure map of 1815] with an enlarged footprint…and the stable block is depicted for the first time. The central range…is clearly a ‘Renaissance’ building dating perhaps between c. 1680-1720. It is considered likely that the façade has been shifted from the west elevation to the east elevation at some point between the late C18 and early C19. The date of the addition of the North Range is similarly difficult to ascertain with any certainty…The staircase and run-plaster mouldings indicate a date around 1720-40. (2)
