Full Description

House and attached former cottages. Mid C17, late C18 and mid C19. Main block timber framed. (1)

C15 - C16, box framed. Internal photographs of interior timbers in JSAC 1995 report. (2)

A mid-17th century house, originally jettied and timber framed. The ground floor has been underbuilt in brick. The building has later rear ranges. (3)

This building, also known as 'Sharp's Yard', is situate on the south-east side of Millgate. The building under investigation is a two-storey, two bay structure. The roof is of common-rafter type with intermediate collars but no trusses under a hipped pantile roof. Unfortunately it was not possible to get into the roof for a full inspection or to sample. In AD 1881, the building is known to have been divided into two shops. Dates suggested for the building range from the sixteenth century or even earlier (Marcombe and Burrill, 1997) to mid-seventeenth century. (4)

A total of seven samples were taken from crossbeams, tiebeams, wall plates and a rear post at this building. Prior to the tree-ring analysis being carried out at this property, a number of dates had been suggested for the building ranging from the sixteenth (and perhaps earlier) to the mid-seventeenth century. Unfortunately only three timbers have been successfully dated, limited the conclusions that can be made about the building as a whole. The two samples dated to the seventeenth century at the earliest, although these coud be much later. The date of c. AD 1760 gained for one sample, which was from a crossbeam, could suggest modifications being carried out to the building in the eighteenth century. (4)
