Full Description
House, stable and pump. c.1880. (1)
Built in the 19th century as a part of the Chilwell Hall Estate and was formerly the farm manager’s house. The Hall itself was demolished in 1933 and the Cottage is one of the few remaining historic estate buildings in the village today… previously known as Stackyard Cottage and Gothic Cottage... It is unclear when the cottage was originally constructed; the Historic England Listing dates it circa 1880, however an early parish map…shows a building with matching footprint in existence in 1829. Due to the estate’s historic presence, it can be assumed that the building existed some time before this. The house appears originally to have been built on a northsouth axis, but with a later frontage parallel to High Road added later. The distinctive front windows are almost identical to those exposed when the Hall was cleared in May 1933. It is possible that the cottage was improved c1803 at about the time the Hall was rebuilt, in an effort to improve the approach to the estate… The earlier maps (1829-1910s) are dominated by the presence of Chilwell Hall and its associated buildings. Ferndale Cottage is located to the east of the hall, adjacent to a collection of outbuildings organised around a large yard, making up the estate farm. Following the construction of the Bye Pass Road in 1929 and the demolition of the Hall in 1933 the area saw vast expansion...Through the 1950s and 1960s the density of development further increased, infilling the remaining estate land. A new property appears on the 1950s map neighbouring Ferndale Cottage at 188 High Road, where the original driveway / access route to the cottage swept round from High Road. A glass building, presumed greenhouse, appears in the 1950s map within the property boundary. An extension to the north property is visible on the 1960s map, a new garage, accessed off of Woodland Grove, running along the property’s northern boundary. (2)
