Full Description

Threshing barn. C18. Timber frame. (1)
Two storey, three bay, timber-framed aisled barn with brick walls and half-hipped pantile roof. It has a central pair of doors. Interior has post and truss framing with large arch braces. The roof is of principal rafter type with collars and clasped purlins.
Dendrochronological analysis suggests a construction date shortly after 1714. Building incorporates a number of reused timbers felled in the second quarter of the 17th century. The barn contains at least 5 timbers felled between 1627-47 one shows signs of reuse and it is suggested that the other 4 17th C. were probably reused timbers as well. The 2 timbers felled in 1714 are the 2 main posts which were most probably used in the initial construction and are unlikely to have been later insertions. (2)
The earliest building on the site is the three bay aisled and timber barn, enclosing much of the south side of the courtyard. The exterior is of res brick with hipped, pantile roof. The brickwork is of the mid C19 and the present owner understands that the pantiles replaced a thatched roof in the 1920s. The brick bond in English Garden Wall bond. The survey concludes that this is a special building, a textbook three aby threshing barn with some unique features. It is the only surviving Nottinghamshire barn with its original hipped, collared roof. It is also the only surviving double aisled barn in the County. There are a number of dates cut into the aisled posts as graffiti, the earliest being 1773 and two of 1800. It is not possible to be accurate about the date of the barn. It could be within a range of 1500 to 1800 although it is likely to be later in that timescale rather than earlier, possibly mid C18 at the latest. (3)
