Full Description

House, C17 and C18, possibly containing timber framing. (1)
Three bay timber-framed two storey house which has subsequently been encased in brickwork. Speculative date of early C17 onwards. The rear has been extended on the ground floor for its full length but roofed under a single slope of handmade clay tiles. Corner posts appear to have been originally earth-fast rising off a buried padstone and there does not seem to be the usual cill beam arrangement. The first floors are ash-lime on reed backing and some internal walls are mud daub with both reed and lath supports. The central chimney stack is built of brick and is in two separate flues. There are some C18 internal features such as splat balusters guarding the stair and ironmongery on the doors. The main front door is a particularly fine contemporary example. The poor quality of the timber would suggest a later rather than earlier date. In the C17 there was a shortage of good building timber. Wide spaced box frame, lack of carpenter’s marks in all but one set of joints, the lack of decorative mouldings to beam edges, relatively crude finishing to main timbers, lightweight roof timbers, earth fast main posts and lack of substantial cill plate, unsophisticated joints, lack of roof windbracing, surviving C17 and C18 internal features such as flat balusters. (2)
Samples were taken from 12 oak timbers forming the roof and main wall frames. Dendr analysis suggested that - 'It is probably that all timbers were felled in 1652-3'. (3)
