Full Description
Opened 1836 according to the Strategic Property database. (1)
Sturton National School. (2)
The buildings were enlarged and almost entirely rebuilt in 1879, at the expense of the Rt. Hon. F. J. Savile-Foljambe. (3)
A National School built in 1836, refitted and extended by Mr. Savile-Foljambe in 1879. A simple building in the local vernacular, with a long extension in a sympathetic style erected in c.1990. The window openings have segmental arched heads; the windows are modern wooden casements, replacing original horizontally sliding sashes. The roof covering is of clay pantiles; of the four chimneys, two have been rebuilt. INTERNALLY, much of the fittings from 1879 remain; these include doors, partitions, wainscoting and parquet flooring, some vent boxes, and a single iron load-bearing column with fluted Doric capital.
