Full Description
Carter Gate. Above modern shops … the restored upper storeys of a timber-framed house. (1)
3 houses. Early C17 with late C19 rear addition, altered and restored C20. (2) (Stylistic date now superceeded by Tree-ring Dating to C14, see below)
Tree-Ring dating undertaken prior to 2000 produced 10 samples from trusses that had 'last measured ring' dates ranging from the Late C13 through to the Mid C14. (3)
Early C17, box framed, close studding, jettied. (4)
House, dendrochronologically dated to the mid-14th century. The visible fabric to the exterior dates from an early 20th-century restoration but the internal timbers have a construction date of around 1353. The rear range is a 19th-century addition. The original building was probably always two storeys in height, four bays long with the first floor jettied to the street front. The roof structure has a crown-post form. The framing on the façade dates from the early 20th-century but earlier arch-braced box framing with brick infill and a mid-rail is visible inside the carriage arch. The ground floor is now occupied by two shop units, one to either side of the off-centre carriage arch. (5)
During the first phase of sampling in 1998, a total of eight oak timbers were sampled by means of coring. These samples were taken from two of the crown posts, collars and braces of the roof of 40 Cartergate. The following year seven further samples were taken from 44 Cartergate, six from the jetty joists and one from a beam in an upstairs cupboard. Owever, of the seven later saples taken, only two had long enough sequences to make dating a possibility and so the other five were not measured. Seven of the sampled contained with a site sequence are from the roof structure of 40 Cartergate with the eighth being from a beam passing through an upstairs cupboard of 44 Cartergate. Although there is only one sample from the structure of 44 Cartergate, it seems likely, on the basis of its date, that the two halves of the building are contemporary. This building was believed to be early seventeenth century. It is now known to have been constructed from trees felled in AD 1353 with construction at or shortly after this date. (6)
