Full Description

House. Mid C18, with early C19 and late C20 alterations. (1)

Timber sampling of 5 samples from a single surviving truss from this building produced two felling dates of c.1574 for 2 samples and c1600 for o1 sample. (2)

Core samples were taken forming the principal and smaller members of a single truss, uncovered during building work at this site. All the principal timbers were of oak and were sampled where accessible. Several of the smaller timbers were either of softwood and appeared to be later inserts, or were of oak but had too few rings to be worth sampling. (3)

Although three samples were successfully dated, only two of them have relative heartwood/sapwood boundaries indicative of timbers with the same felling date, between the range AD 1560-80. These two samples come from the tiebeam and south wall plate respectively, which are probably original timbers. The third dated sample thought to have been felled some time later in AD 1585-AD1605, comes from a smaller stud post and most probably represents a repair or later work. The reanalysis has, to a larger extent, simply recreated that originally undertaken in 1995, except that the samples have been dated individually rather than combined into a site sequence. This is due to the low number of rings by which these samples overlap each other, less than the acceptable number now used by the laboratory. (3)
