Full Description
2 houses. Late C17 and early C18, with mid C19 and mid and late C20 alterations. (1)
47 Balderton Gate: This two-storey building has a structure of brick and has a rendered gable and pantile roof. On the east end gable is a chimney stack with the remains of the fireplace bressummer still visible. This building is thought to date from the late-seventeenth and early-eighteenth centuries, with mid-ninteenth and mid-to-late twentieth century alterations. This is little of the original tikmber structure visible and/or accessible and sampling was restricted to a single truss on the second storey. (2)
As a result of the tree-ring analysis on this single truss two timbers have been successfully dated, to a felling date within the range AD 1453-72. This building was thought to date from the late seventeenth/early eighteenth centuries and although the dating of two timbers cannot be used to make any real conclusions about the construction of the building, it can be said that it contains timber from the second half of the fifteenth century. If, however, more original timbers could be found in the building it would be interestin to see what dates these produced. (2)
