Full Description

Milestone. Late C18. Now partly illegible. (1)
C17 yellow sandstone milestone reading
TO LONDON
132 MILES
TO MANSFIELD
12
NEWARK (Partially illegible)
…set into a wall and measures approximately 0.76m high by 0.61m wide by 0.14m deep (to wall). It has a sloping top to allow water to run off. Iron fixings secure the stone into the wall on both sides 0.17m from the top. Two lead fixings pin the monument to the wall at low level. Also at low level to either side are cement fillets. Loose sand lies at the bottom of the milestone. The matrix or cement is an iron/silica material. Monument is of local Mansfield sandstone as used in the Southwell Minster. Very deteriorated condition…largely due to the elements together with the accumulated effects of soluble salt movements within the stone. The sandstone is very porous…will be subject to water and salt spray thus accelerating the erosion. (2)
Proposal to replace the milestone was proposed by Southwell Civic Trust in 2014. (3)
