Full Description

East Stoke … In the village … the Pauncefote Arms. (1)
Hard to date from S.S. photos, but certainly not Med. (2)
…constructed in red brick with pantile roof. Plat band runs across the elevation. Refenestration is apparent across the [principal] elevation, including the blocking of the second-floor openings and replacement of all original windows. A series of extensions have been added to the north elevation throughout the C19 and C20. (3)

In March 2015, while the former Paunceforte Arms was being converted into a residential building as well as being extended into the area previously occupied by the car park, a human skull was discovered in a foundation trench. No archaeological condition was placed on the works and so this report likely comprised the only record of some of the archaeological and historic features affected by the building works. It was not possible to date the skull with any certainty. It is possible the rest of the skeleton remains in situ, and the community archaeologists advised that it would be beneficial, should the landowner so wish, to have an archaeologist present on site if further groundworks were to take place.
