Begun in 1937. By E. Vincent Harris. Work stopped from 1940 to 1945 and the building was incomplete when first used in 1946. It was finished in 1965 except for a suite of committee rooms not fitted up until 1975. (1)
E. Vincent Harris (1879-1971) … designed many large municipal buildings including … the Town Hall Extension, Manchester (1934-8) … and Nottingham County Hall (1935). (2)
Similar in plan and scale (though certainly not in style) to the contemporary Manchester Town Hall Extension. (3)
