Full Description
A small, rectangular earthwork and an ovoid mound is visible just W of L2575 in Thieves Wood. (1)
A very small, square enclosure formed by a wide, spread bank (c 3.5m wide and 0.2m high, c 4.5m square), with slight traces of an outer ditch on all but the S side. AH Oswald could not add to description. Its smallness and slight bank with no obvious entrance suggest it is comparatively recent. No trace of an "ovoid mound" was found. To the W of the enclosure, in a fir plantation, is a small hill mutilated by quarrying - other quarries in the area, one of these may be meant. (2)
Topographic survey of the mound suggests that it is a natural mound that has been altered by quarrying on the eastern side. A broad holloway passes by the mound on the west, and the former course of the A60 passes by on the east. Slight holloways criss-cross the mound on the south and east sides. The mound would have dominated the view of anyone travelling up the routeways. It is likely the location of 'Galow Tre Hyl' mentioned on the Belvoir map, and therefore possible location of gallows and/or gibbets. The wider area is covered with ridge and furrow from 20th century forestry activity. (3)
See L2575 for ditch to E, L2559 for further ditch.
