Full Description
Grove Hall was demolished in 1951. It had C16 or C17 work at the back, and John Smythson's plan of 'Mr Nevelles: House at Grove' is preserved. Otherwise of 1762 by Carr of York. Repton made improvements for Colonel Eyre in 1790. (1)
Named 'The Hall' on (2).
Sir John Hercy … probably built a substantial house … close to the site of, or partially incorporated in the later Hall. A considerable number of Elizabethan coins, many dated 1562, were found when a Tudor tower was pulled down during the (mid C18) alterations to the house. There is no evidence to confirm any building at Grove by Smythson. The landscape design [involved] advice from Humphrey Repton. (3)
