Full Description
Building platforms, ridge and furrow and other earthworks around the village of Scarrington - see L7766,7,8. (1)
Previously unidentified house platforms together with the remains of substantial walls were discovered at Scarrington. An area of earthwork some 60m N-S and extending at least 50m either side to the W and E (of pipeline trench). Excavation revealed walling of two structures, cobbled surfaces and a ditch containing slag and charcoal, as well as Med pottery. These remains point to substantial medieval occupation on this site (with some evidence for early post medieval metalworking) and would seem to indicate that the medieval village of Scarrington was centred further to the S and W, these house platforms having been left deserted by the north-eastwards migration.
