Full Description
Excavations have shown the present cottages W wall was built over a medieval precursor and that the interior of the medieval building was within the present cottages interior. The original length of this N-S wall is not known but it may be the continuation of the medieval bay surviving at right angles to Henrietta Maria's Lodging House. Associated medieval occupation survived in areas 2 and 5 though the function of the building was not determined. In trench 5 the foundations were deeper than trench 2. No contemporary E wall was found in trench 4 and the nature of the archaeology suggested that a wall would be located further to the W. (1)
Source (1) seems to pick certain elements of the archaeological evidence to fit its theory, whilst ignoring others that do not fit so neatly. Four probable medieval walls are recorded but only two (c. 20m apart on roughly the same alignment) are suggested as parts of the W wall of the medieval building. However, these walls have different foundation depths, different methods of construction and different bonding agents between the stones, suggesting they are unlikely to be part of the same build. Additionally, insufficient attention is given to use of artefacts as dating aids, C12 splashed ware is mentioned in trench 5 but the context from which it was recovered is not specified, the location within the paragraph implies it may have been associated with construction of the wall, while occupation layers associated with the wall to the S contain pottery of C15 - C16. The cannon ball and fragments of burnt stone in these layers also hint at an interesting element of the history of the buildings on site but are not discussed in (1). (2)
