Full Description

The second major building phase took place in the post medieval period, probably in C17. The W wall of this building (or buildings) was still on the early alignment and in trench 2 a small east west wall was butting this foundation. A corresponding N-S internal wall was seen in the E section of the area. In trench 01 a contemporary oven occupied most of the area. On the E side it was truncated by the Victorian construction trench suggesting that the contemporary E wall was outside the present building. Further N an E wall was examined within the present structure and irregular alignment on the E side seems likely. In trench 2, the top of the (late med / early post med) pit fill (or bottom of the layer sealing it) coincided with the level at which much of the stone wall coursing was coated with mortar. Repair work to the external wall faces was taking place whilst modification was being undertaken inside. (1) (2)
