Full Description

Excavation for road revealed a soft, grey black clayey silt up to 0.6m thick. Its S edge showed an angled cut 60 degrees to horizontal. Its N edge was angled much more shallowly and marked by a 6-10cm thick layer of coal fragments. Both edges ran parallel, approximately 30m apart. This appears to be the remains of a canal basin that was buried by the construction of the railway embankment. The coal at the N end suggests that it served a colliery for a time. Although the E and W edges of this basin were not located, a possible entrance from the canal was. (1)
