Full Description

Adjacent to the canal bridge was evidence of a later, angled railway crossing of the canal. Both sides of the canal were approached by flat brick lined surfaces, with large stone slabs at the edges. The S approach was up to c.20 feet across. This bridge can be seen on OS maps of 1900 onwards. It was a replacement of an earlier one (at 447934 3444334). The map for 1881 shows a crossing which had dissected the NE corner of the canal bridge. No longer tracable on the canal's S side, this crossing could just be seen beside the canal bridge. This change of line came about after Awsworth Colliery went out of use and the railway line was re-routed. (1)
See M18345 for canal bridge, M18343 for Colliery.
