Full Description

The railway bridge over Park Hill was a remnant of the embankment leading up to the nearby Bennerley Viaduct. Left behind when a middle section was removed during a period of opencast mining. OS maps show that two tracks, one a siding, had been sited over the bridge, together with an adjacent mineral line bridge on the N side. The main bridge had been altered at least once. Before then (pre 1920s) it was of simple wrought iron girder construction, with abutment walls and piers made out of coarse rubble stonework. The altered bridge later featured a brick arch, with its upper levels rebuilt in blue engineering bricks. The arch was later still protected by concrete at both ends. The first alteration to the bridge occurred in the 1890s when a mineral line was built to join the main line a short distance to the N-E. The alterations to the bridge in the 1920s retained the basic shape of the 1870s construction. The flanking stone walls were retained, thought their tops were alteredThe earlier crossing had required four bridge spans; this number was lessened in the 1920s. (1)
