Full Description

(OS map of 1885) shows the avenue, flanked by shrubs, leading south from the White House, whose front elevation faced south. A circular building of approximately 6m diameter is also shown. The feature on the 1885 map coincides well with the raised platform which still survives, although the outline is now different. This raised area is probably the remains of a mount. The circular building was probably a gazebo. The excavations revealed little of interest in the make-up of the mound except to show that its edges have been altered and degraded by subsequent dumping of rubbish. There was no sign of the gazebo or its foundations. It is possible that they may be buried under later rubbish. (1)
