Full Description
In 1130 Ralph de Chevrolcourt donated the site and funded the building of a small Benedictine nunnery. After the Dissolution in 1539 the nunnery was closed and the estate passed to the Crown. In 1671 it was sold to Major Samuel Taylor, and later passed to the White family. It would seem most likely that existing features such as the fish ponds and moat were remodelled and adapted to form the water gardens. The Pope - inspired grotto at the north end of the main pond is typical of the period, i.e. late seventeenth century to early eighteenth century. The west and south facades of the house appear to date from the early eighteenth century as does the stone walled garden immediately to the north of the house. The pavilions in the Castle Garden date from the mid eighteenth century. The cartshed north of the stables and the listed piers south of the hall date from the latter part of the century. In 1810 the stable block, courtyard and attached kennels were built. In 1828 the 2nd Baronet made great alterations to Wallingwells. It is likely that the three walled kitchen gardens were also built around this time.
The surrounding parkland to the east and west of the house was typical of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, it was laid out formally using grand avenues and symmetrically arranged rectangular clumps. The Wallingwells Wood was laid out with a mixed tree cover and a central rond-point. These features had largely survived to the end of the nineteenth century. (2)
