Ten acre plot of land allocated to Improvement Commissioners on 1st December 1857 for both Dissenters and Church of England. Originally there were 2 mortuary chapels connected by a gateway and surmounted by an octagonal spire. There were separate lodges for the Superintendent and the gravedigger. It was built at a cost of £3,500.
The topography of the site viewed from the Nottingham Road is quite dramatic and there are a good number of mature ornamental trees. (1) (2)
Public cemetery owned by Mansfield Burial Board and designed by C J Neale with buildings by James Pigott Pritchett and Sons of York. The cemetery was also designed to provide a public recreation space. It was consecrated in November 1856 and extended in 1898. During the 1970s many of the old headstones were cleared and the vegetation thinned. The cemetery is still in use. (4) (5)
